At the October 14 Board of Education meeting, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Gallagher began her report by introducing Long Beach Director of Science PK-12 Cristie Tursi who presented this month’s student showcase which featured a Hydroponic Grow Tower Pilot Program that is currently happening at East and West Elementary Schools.

Joining Ms. Tursi’s presentation was Long Beach Director of Food Services Kyle Swan, who expressed his enthusiasm for the program and the valuable lessons it offers students. He explained that basil is currently being grown and will soon be featured as a pizza topping or transformed into pesto sauce, allowing students to experience the journey from seed to table. Elementary students Ben Flammer and Garner Senken also shared their excitement as they watch the seeds sprout and grow each day.

The Hydroponic Grow Tower initiative is an innovative pilot program introducing Flex Farm Hydroponic Grow Towers to the East and West Elementary students. The program promotes hands-on learning in science, sustainability, and nutrition. Each presenter shared their enthusiasm for cultivating fresh produce while fostering connections to nature, supporting food security, and encouraging healthy habits. The Flex Farm curriculum aligns with New York State Science Standards, with lessons that build in complexity across grade levels.

In addition to the student showcase, Dr. Gallagher shared a presentation about AI in Long Beach schools. Click here to view Dr. Gallagher’s presentation.
