The Long Beach High School physical education program is an integral part of the total educational process. Physical education promotes a positive attitude towards active lifestyles through fitness, conditioning, skill development, active participation in physical and wellness activities and good health practices. Graduation requirements necessitate that every student must earn two credits of physical education. We offer a variety of activities each quarter which provide a balanced curriculum for the students.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Our program offers a wide variety of activities that will improve the quality of one's life. The program aims to develop the physical, mental, emotional, and social growth of every student. The program is divided into four units per year. Classes meet every other day during a six day cycle. In order to successfully complete each unit the following is required: Attendance

Only two excused absences are allowed during any quarter. Any excused absences that exceed two during a quarter must be made up or the student will receive a zero for that day. Unexcused absences cannot be made up and will be recorded as a zero for the day.

•  Make Up Classes
Any excused absences are to be made up within ten (10) schools of the absence, during the extra help period. The student's physical education teacher will conduct the make-up classes.

•  Dress
T-shirts, shorts or sweats, socks and sneakers must be worn for all physical education classes except swimming. A swimsuit must be worn for all swim classes.

•  Lockers
All students are required to bring and use their own combination lock to store their personal belongings during their physical education class.

All students are expected to lock all of their belongings in a P.E. locker. The Long Beach City School District will not be responsible for any lost or stolen items.

Female: Tall lockers will be assigned to multiple sport athletes and seniors. They do not have to remove their locks on a daily basis. Small lockers are available for P.E. classes.

Male: Each male student will be given a locker to use only during his PE class. Once the period has ended, each student must remove the lock. Any locks left on will be clipped.

•  Grading Policy
We stress participation and effort as well as teamwork, cooperation and the ability to follow set routine as our general grading guidelines. Each student is given the opportunity to earn up to ten (10) points every class based on the following scale as awarded by the teacher:

0-3 points for being on time and prepared.

0-2 points for performing the proper warm-up exercises as instructed by the teacher

0-5 points for participation, effort, teamwork and cooperative play. Unprepared students will receive one point for the day and will be marked present.

•  Medical Excuse
Any student who is medically excused must present a doctor's note to the school nurse for verification. For medical excuse of four weeks or less, the student must report to his/her class when scheduled. The teacher will assign alternative assignments or activities for any student who falls under this category.

•  STUDENTS EARN A PASS OR FAIL GRADE

•  Sportsfolio
Students medically excused from physical education for more than four weeks or those excused for religious reasons, will be enrolled in a Sportsfolio class. Students who are medically excused for this period must present a doctor's note to the school nurse. The nurse will then notify the student's guidance counselor who will enroll the student. The student is responsible to report to the Director of Health, Physical Education and Athletics to pick up Sportsfolio assignments. Once the student is medically cleared by the nurse to return to physical education, the nurse will notify the student's guidance counselor who will enroll the student in a physical education class.

Long Beach Public Schools, in partnership with the Long Beach Booster Club, proudly celebrated the induction of four honorees into the district’s Wall of Fame during a ceremony held on October 11 at Long Beach High School. Established in 1996, the Wall of Fame recognizes alumni and community members whose achievements serve as an inspiration for current students and the entire Long Beach community.

This year’s inductees include the 2005 State Champion Ice Hockey Team, Stefan Chernaski (’88), Jeff Kupferman (’70), and Colonel Estee Pinchasin (’93). All inductees were celebrated for their lasting impact on athletics, public service, education, and leadership.

The 2005 State Champion Ice Hockey Team made school history with their thrilling State Finals victory, overcoming the top-seeded Cheektowaga Warriors. Their resilience and teamwork inspired generations of future players and cemented the program’s place in Long Beach sports legacy.

Stefan Chernaski excelled in football, wrestling, and baseball before embarking on a distinguished 30-year career with the Long Beach Police Department, where he serves as Commanding Officer of the Detective Division. Chernaski has been honored with numerous commendations, including the Nassau County Municipal Police Chiefs Association Distinguished Service Award.

Jeff Kupferman devoted three decades as a beloved school social worker at Long Beach High School, known for his compassion and unwavering dedication to students. His positive influence continues to resonate within the community long after his 2010 retirement.

Colonel Estee Pinchasin has built an extraordinary military career, currently serving as Joint Director of Logistics at the National Security Agency. A former Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District, she has led large-scale engineering projects and emergency recovery operations, earning multiple commendations including two Bronze Star Medals and six Meritorious Service Medals.

“Each of these inductees reflects the spirit of excellence and service that defines Long Beach,” said Dr. Jennifer Gallagher, Long Beach Superintendent of Schools. “Their accomplishments inspire our students to dream big and make a difference.”

The ceremony was hosted by Long Beach Board of Trustee Sam Pinto, serving as Master of Ceremonies. The event celebrated not only the 2025 honorees but also the legacy of past inductees whose names grace the Wall of Fame. The Long Beach Wall of Fame is a lasting tribute to the school community’s shared pride and achievement.

Long Beach High School celebrated homecoming under the Friday night lights at Veterans Field on Oct. 10.

Before the game, students, families, and community members gathered for the annual homecoming carnival, sponsored by the student government organizations, in the middle school parking lot. Attendees interacted with club members, played games, and took part in activities that showcased Long Beach pride.

As evening fell, fans filled the bleachers at Veterans Field, decked out in blue and white to cheer on the Marines in their highly anticipated matchup against Calhoun High School. Prior to kickoff, senior football players and cheerleaders were escorted onto the field by family and friends to celebrate their final homecoming appearance.

The stands were alive with energy as the pep band played, and the cheerleaders led the crowd in supporting the team. During halftime, the color guard, pep band, and varsity cheerleading squad delivered lively performances that had the crowd on its feet. The celebration continued with the annual Bulldog Dash, featuring Long Beach youth football players racing across the field and the crowning of this year’s homecoming king, Maurice Dupree, and queen, Julia DiGiorgio.

The evening concluded with Marine football victory of 14-7!
