  • Essential Question: How does where someone lives affect how they live?

  • Key Ideas: Living in Long Beach influences who we are as individuals and as a community. Thanksgiving and Martin Luther King Jr. day are important national holidays.
  • Vocabulary: community, commute, neighbor, neighborhood, public transportation, tradition holidays
  • Key People and Places: Long Beach, Atlantic Ocean, Martin Luther King, Jr.

Theme 4: Geography, Humans and the Environment
  • Key Ideas: Rural, urban and suburban communities have both similar and Different characteristics. Long Beach has some urban and some suburban characteristics.
  • Vocabulary: agriculture, country, crops, density, downtown, farm, home, livestock, metropolitan area, rural, skyscraper, suburb, subway, urban
  • Key Places: NY State, “upstate”, Long Island, NY City

  • Identify the characteristics of rural, urban, and suburban communities.
  • Explain how Long Beach can be seen as urban and suburban, but not rural.
