Welcome to the Long Beach School District Mathematics pages
The 2011-12 Academic Year is a transition year in mathematics. Along with most other states, New York is moving toward the
Common Core State Standards . The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world.
The K-5 standards provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals-which help young students build the foundation to successfully apply more demanding math concepts and procedures, and move into applications.
Presentations:
• Common Core Standard and Parents .pdf - Updated: November 2, 2011
• How Can I Help My Child in Mathematics? - Video from November 30, 2011
Presentation conducted by Cheriese Pemberton, Director of Mathematics.
The 6 - 8 standards move students from concentration on number and operations to algebra, probability and statistics. The middle school standards are robust and provide a coherent and rich preparation for high school mathematics.
The high school standards set a rigorous definition of college and career readiness. These rigorous standards afford students the opportunity to develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations, in their future endeavors.
Academic Intervention Services are available to students who need extra support in Mathematics from grade 3 through the Regents classes.
