Mathematics

Welcome to the Long Beach School District Mathematics pages

The 2012-13 Academic Year involves a complete implementation of the Common Core State standards in grades K-8. Along with most states, New York has adopted the  Common Core Learning Standards .

The standards are informed by the highest, most effective models from states across the country and countries around the world.

The K-5 standards provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals-which help young students build the foundation to successfully apply more demanding math concepts and procedures, and move into applications.

Elementary

Beginning in elementary school, the mathematics focuses on the development of critical thinking and problem solving strategies. The K-5 Common Core Learning standards provide students with a solid foundation in whole numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions and decimal operations. This practice helps young students build the foundation to successfully apply more demanding math concepts and procedures, and move into applications. The use of various manipulatives enables children to enjoy a hands-on approach to learning. Students participate in small group activities where they learn to listen and consider the ideas of others in solving problems. Students continually communicate mathematical ideas and solutions and explain their reasoning.

Essentially, teachers assess students’ abilities, plan instruction, teach, and then re-assess students’ learning.  Instruction is targeted and as individualized as possible.

We see the following programs and initiatives as tools to support a teacher to deliver high-quality literacy instruction:

•    enVision Math Program
•    Math Learning Academy
•    Math Block: 60 minutes of instruction
•    District-wide Common Math Assessments
•    Math Olympiads
•    Academic Intervention Services
•    Math units of study that guarantee a rich and viable curriculum that is aligned with the Common Core Learning Standards

The 6 - 8 standards move students from concentration on number and operations to algebra, probability and statistics. The middle school standards are robust and provide a coherent and rich preparation for high school mathematics.

The high school standards set a rigorous definition of college and career readiness. These rigorous standards afford students the opportunity to develop a depth of understanding and ability to apply mathematics to novel situations, in their future endeavors.

Academic Intervention Services are available to students who need extra support in Mathematics from grade 2 through the Regents classes.
