Long Beach Public Schools is committed to providing opportunities for all students to achieve success, academically and personally. The Office of Pupil Personnel Services at Long Beach Public Schools focuses on supporting all students in the least restrictive environment and helping all students achieve to the best of their ability.
Pupil Personnel Services
Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) is an integral part of the educational system. PPS provides Districtwide school counseling services, psychological and social work services, and health services. The provision of these services is designed to help the process of growth and development for all children, ages 3 through 22. School Psychologists and School Social Workers provide and support services for students and families experiencing learning difficulties, emotional challenges, family crisis, health concerns, and other related academic, social and emotional problems.
School nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development, promote health and safety, intervene with actual and potential health problems, provide case management services and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self advocacy and learning.
Special Education
Our focus in special education is to provide a comprehensive and yet individualized program for students with various disabilities from the ages of 3 until 22 years with services and/or supports in a warm, supportive and motivating setting, and where policies and procedures foster students' right to a "free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment." Services and supports can include speech and language services, hearing and/ or vision services, counseling services, occupational therapy and physical therapy services, and special education programs and services/ supports.
Nonpublic School Students
If you place your child in a nonpublic school and would like your child to receive special education services while enrolled in that school you must request those services in writing no later than June 1 before the school year in which services arc to be provided. If your child is first identified as a student with a disability after Junel and before April 1 of the current school, you may submit your request within 30 days after your child is first identified.
