Students in Ms. Maria Hartmann’s English class recently celebrated the completion of their original picture books by sharing them with first graders from Lido Elementary School. During a special visit, the younger students traveled to the high school, where they met the student authors and enjoyed personalized read-aloud sessions of the newly created stories.
The project began with a virtual exchange, during which the high school seniors connected with the first graders to learn about their favorite books, characters, and themes. From imaginative adventures to heartwarming tales of friendship, the insights shared by the young readers helped guide the high school students as they wrote and illustrated their own children’s books.
When the classes met in person, the collaboration came full circle. First graders eagerly listened as the seniors brought their stories to life, creating a meaningful and memorable experience for students on both sides.
Lido Elementary School librarian Tara Salvador said, “By bringing together students at different stages of their educational journeys, this initiative highlights the importance of literacy, creativity, and shared learning experiences.”
This cross-grade partnership not only fostered creativity and mentorship but also reinforced a shared love of reading and storytelling throughout the school community.
