Long Beach High School held its inaugural event honoring students who received the Seal of Biliteracy on June 6. This is the first year that the school offered this opportunity to students enrolled in French, Italian and Spanish, and 34 seniors earned the distinction for proficiency in their studied languages. 

According to the New York State Seal of Biliteracy, its intent is to encourage the study of languages; identify high school graduates with language and biliteracy skills for employers; provide universities with additional information about applicants seeking admission; prepare students with twenty-first century skills; recognize the value of foreign and native language instruction in schools; and affirm the value of diversity in a multilingual society.

The accomplishment reflects students’ success on exams and projects completed as part of their language classes.
