The Glen Cove High School auditorium was recently rocking to the sounds of the United States Marine Corps. Rock Band, which stopped in to perform for students and provide a special clinic for student musicians.

The band’s 45-minute performance included hits from Boston, AC/DC and Rage Against the Machine, among others. GCHS Band Director Nick Carbuto and Principal Dr. Joseph Hinton arranged the visit. The Marine Rock Band’s brass quintet conducted a clinic with the GCHS brass section following the performance. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Laria stopped by to welcome and salute these men and women who serve and protect our country.

Dr. Hinton is a retired Lieutenant Colonel of the U.S. Marine Corps and served as Platoon Commander during the Gulf War. Mr. Carbuto, who leads the Big Red Marching Band –the only high school marching band selected to perform in last year’s New York City Veteran’s Day Parade– is the son of Marine Corps Sgt. Al Carbuto, who served in the Pacific in WWII.  A professional musician/composer, Sgt. Carbuto’s wartime song “Get Your Gear On” was adopted by the First Marine Division as its official marching song.
